Planning Application BH2008/02854 demolition of a distinguished and sound building to be replaced by a temporary looking construction with a giant glass bubble at the front is proposed for Varndean College.
Sadly the Brighton Society’s attempt to get the present building listed was turned down by the Secretary of State. The Preston and Old Patcham Society have also campaigned against this application to replace the present distinguished building is likely to go to the City’s Planning Committee on Wednesday 4 February 2009. This meeting is open to the public and it would be helpful if residents could attend in order to demonstrate their concern.

Planning Application BH2008/02641 Balfour Junior School
The plan to extend this school may go to the same meeting of the Planning Committee. The immediate residents were not notified of this proposal and this has resulted in a great deal of ill-feeling. It seemed to us to be an unnecessarily crude scheme, though some amendments have now been made. It seems likely that some residents will want to attend the same meeting, which starts at 2.00 pm at Hove Town Hall.

THE PRESTON & OLD PATCHAM SOCIETY is proud to be able to present The Murial Elms Collection, a very special set of photographs, slides and postcards that show old Patcham from days gone by.

We are lucky to have been been given the opportunity to digitise this collection of more than 100 images. We are currently showing a total of 30 images here in the site. Murial Elms is giving the collection to the Brighton & Hove Archaeological Society. We are very grateful for the loan of the material to display in our site.

Murial Elms built up this collection over a lifetime and used the slides to illustrate her talks on Patcham to local groups. The Collection is also well-known to local historians.
